I was getting my old dolls ready to sell, and their bodies have changed color. The areas that was coved by their clothing have faded to a paler color. Their limbs have gotten darker. One doll's face is almost transparent. Another one's hair seems to have faded, and her face has been tinted the same color as her hair (pink). I checked one that I had left in the box, and she had also changed colors. Their hair texture has changed as well, but that may be from being played with in water.
The dolls are Barbie sized and 17in Sailor Moon dolls, produced in the 90's. Most of them are from Japan. They've been stored in my closet since I quit playing with them. The dolls they were stored with (including other Sailor Moon dolls) aren't any different than the day they were last played with.
What could have caused this? Are they still safe to give to a child?
Fashion Dolls Changing Color? (early to mid 90's)?
Does anyone smoke in your home? Sounds like lots of yours have nicotine stains. Stains and color changes in vinyl come from smoke, heat, cold, and lights. UV rays also cause changes. Sunshine exposure can ruin a doll near a window. Remember that most dolls are made for play and not to last forever. Oils from your fingers also affect vinyl dolls. The more you touch them and play with them the more the attract dirt and turn darker.
